History & Significance

Prince Edward escaped from baronial custody at Hereford in May 1265 by outriding his baronial guards on a fresh horse. He rode to meet Roger Mortimer at Wigmore and immediately began organizing royalist forces. The escape transformed the military situation. Within three months of escaping, Edward had destroyed Simon junior at Kenilworth dawn and killed Simon senior at Evesham. The escape was the turning point of the entire Barons War.
