History & Significance

Rochester Castle was seized by Odo of Bayeux — half-brother of William the Conqueror — as part of the rebellion against William Rufus in favour of Robert Curthose. William Rufus besieged it successfully, sending Odo into permanent exile. The fall of Rochester secured Rufus hold on England against the Norman baronage.
