The Battle

History & Significance

Parliamentary cavalry under Henry Ireton surprised Royalist officers at Market Harborough — some reportedly at breakfast. The discovery of the New Model Army's proximity forced Prince Rupert's hand: he had to turn and fight at Naseby rather than retreat further. This skirmish therefore directly precipitated the decisive battle of the Civil War. Without it, Charles might have avoided action and prolonged the war.
