The Battle

History & Significance

After crushing Boudicca, Paulinus conducted a savage punitive campaign against the Iceni and their allies. Tacitus records that fire and sword were used indiscriminately. The procurator Julius Classicianus sent secret reports to Rome that Paulinus was making peace impossible and that Britain would never be quiet while he remained — the first recorded example of civilian oversight restraining military excess. Paulinus was recalled.
