Abingdon was an important Parliamentary garrison threatening Oxford (the Royalist capital) from the south. The Royalists made several attempts to retake the town, all of which were repulsed. The town's Parliamentary garrison tied down significant Royalist forces throughout the war and contributed to the eventual siege of Oxford.
