The Battle

History & Significance

The Wash and East Anglian coast were increasingly vulnerable to Saxon and Frankish raids in the mid-to-late 4th century. The Saxon Shore fort at Brancaster (Branodunum) was constructed specifically to defend this coastline. Archaeology shows villa destruction and coin hoards from this period — signs of insecurity and wealth being hidden. The region's vulnerability contributed to the severity of the 367 Barbarian Conspiracy attack.

Forces Involved

Saxons: c. 500–1,500 raiders. Roman coastal settlements: militia c. 200–500.
