History & Significance

The Eastern Association had to maintain coastal security against Royalist naval harassment along the Suffolk and Norfolk coasts. Lowestoft was the main fishing port and had parliamentary sympathies. Occasional Royalist naval raids and landing attempts were repelled by local militia and parliamentary forces. The security of the East Anglian coastline was vital for preventing Royalist resupply from the Netherlands.
