History & Significance

Chelmsford was the gathering point for the Essex Royalist rising of 1648. The Royalist force that eventually marched to Colchester assembled at Chelmsford where the Essex trained bands and Royalist volunteers mustered. Parliamentary cavalry under Whalley skirmished with the rear of this force as it withdrew northward toward Colchester.
