History & Significance

Roger of Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, pushed into mid-Wales in the early 1070s and built the first castle at Montgomery, establishing one of the great Marcher lordships. His campaigns into Powys were the opening phase of the systematic Norman conquest of Wales. Roger used the usual Norman technique of building castles as he advanced, creating fortified strong points that could not easily be captured by Welsh forces lacking siege equipment.
