History & Significance

Hector Mor MacLean of Duart — chief of the most powerful clan in Mull and the greatest of the MacLean lords — was among those arrested in the 1608 government voyage to the Hebrides and compelled to submit to crown authority. The MacLeans of Duart had for decades been the principal naval power in the inner Hebrides, able to mobilise scores of galleys and thousands of fighting men. Their submission and the conditions imposed — including acceptance of Statutes of Iona constraints on retinue size — fundamentally altered the military balance in the western isles and allowed the government to end the era of Hebridean autonomy.
