As the Jacobite army retreated from Derby through England, Cumberland's cavalry caught the rearguard at Clifton Moor on 18 December 1745. A brief but fierce engagement allowed the main army to escape into Scotland. This is often cited as the last military action on English soil. The Jacobites crossed into Scotland the next day.
