History & Significance

Badbury Rings is one of the largest and most dramatically sited hillforts in Dorset, controlling the convergence of several major routes. The nearby Roman road junction at Vindocladia (Shapwick) was established shortly after conquest, confirming the strategic value of the site. It is one of the twenty oppida Suetonius records as captured by Vespasian. Later Arthurian tradition speculatively associates Badbury with Badon Hill — three centuries after the actual Roman assault.

Forces Involved

Infantry cohort of Legio II Augusta; scale of defences suggests multiple cohorts required
