History & Significance

At the Battle of Cropredy Bridge on 29 June 1644 there were multiple crossing points contested including fords above and below the main bridge. Parliamentary forces attempted to cross via Slat Mill ford while the main engagement occurred at the bridge. Royalist cavalry exploited the river crossing actions to isolate and destroy Parliamentary units that had crossed.
