The Battle

History & Significance

The Barbarian Conspiracy of 367 was a coordinated attack on Roman Britain by Picts, Attacotti, and Saxons simultaneously. The Yorkshire coast was particularly vulnerable to Saxon seaborne raids while Wall-crossings allowed Picts to ravage the north. The comes Fullofaudes (Count of Britain) was killed and the dux Nectaridus (Count of the Saxon Shore) also fell. Ammianus Marcellinus records that deserters and slaves joined the raiders in a general breakdown of order. Count Theodosius spent two years restoring Roman control.

Forces Involved

Saxons/Attacotti: c. 1,000–2,000. Romans: c. 500–1,500 (later Theodosius: c. 6,000).
