History & Significance

Fort Augustus, after Cumberland's forces reoccupied it following the Jacobite defeat, became the main base of operations for the pacification of the central and western Highlands. Cumberland himself was based here for some weeks in 1746. From Fort Augustus, columns radiated in all directions — up the Great Glen, into Glenmoriston, Glen Affric, Strathglass and toward the western seaboard. These columns were methodical: they burned every house, killed every man found in arms, and drove off every herd of cattle. Reports from Fort Augustus record numerous encounters with armed Jacobite survivors throughout June and July 1746. The fort became the administrative centre of the burning of the glens.
