The Battle

History & Significance

Throughout the spring and early summer of 1651 Cromwell repeatedly probed the Stirling position where the Scottish army under Leslie had concentrated. Several skirmishes took place around the bridges and causeways approaching Stirling as English forces tested Scottish defences. Leslie's refusal to risk another open engagement after Dunbar kept his army intact but also kept it trapped north of the Forth.
