History & Significance

Aberdeen was occupied by English Parliamentary forces in 1651 following the Cromwellian conquest of Scotland. The city which had changed hands repeatedly during the Montrose campaigns now submitted to English military authority. An English garrison was installed and the city's trade and administration came under English supervision as part of the union imposed on Scotland in 1652.
