The Battle

History & Significance

Gilbert fitz Richard de Clare obtained the grant of Ceredigion from Henry I and conquered it with characteristic Norman speed, building castles at Aberystwyth and Cardigan. The conquest opened the fertile valley of Ceredigion to Norman settlement and pushed the Welsh population to the uplands. Ceredigion became a contested prize fought over repeatedly between the Welsh princes and the Normans throughout the twelfth century, changing hands multiple times.
