Glasgow was occupied and garrisoned by English Parliamentary forces following the Cromwellian conquest of Scotland in 1651. A fort was constructed in the city to overawe the population. Glasgow was the largest city in the west of Scotland and its garrisoning was essential to Cromwellian control of Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and the southwest. The English occupation of Glasgow lasted until the Restoration in 1660.
