The Battle

History & Significance

Newcastle's second and more determined siege of Hull in 1643 was again defeated. The garrison under Lord Fairfax conducted bold sorties; the surrounding land was flooded; Parliamentary ships maintained supply. Thomas Fairfax escaped from Hull by night to continue operations. When Parliament's Scottish alliance was concluded, Newcastle was forced to withdraw to oppose the Scottish entry into England, finally ending the Hull sieges.
