New Alresford in Hampshire was occupied by Parliamentary forces following the Battle of Cheriton in March 1644, which was fought in the hills immediately south of the town. The Royalist army retreating northward abandoned Alresford and the town served as a Parliamentary base for operations in Hampshire. The battle itself took its alternative name of Alresford from the nearby town.
