The Battle

History & Significance

The Battle of Drumlui was a Scottish clan battle fought in either 1330 or 1337 in the Scottish Highlands, pitting the Clan Cameron against the Clan Mackintosh. The conflict arose from a longstanding territorial dispute over lands in Lochaber. The parents of William Mackintosh, 7th chief of Clan Mackintosh and the confederation of Clan Chattan, had migrated from those lands, which were subsequently occupied by the Clan Cameron without disturbance. When William came of age he demanded the restoration of the lands, but the Camerons refused, claiming that the lands had been deserted and now belonged to themselves as the first to seize and occupy them.

The battle is recorded in the Kinrara manuscript, which describes a great engagement at Drumlui in which William Mackintosh defeated the Cameron forces, who were led by Donald Alin Vic Ian, also known as Donald Alin Mhic Evin. Despite the victory, a number of Mackintosh and Clan Shaw men were also mortally wounded during the fighting.

The aftermath of the Battle of Drumlui set in motion a bitter feud between the two clans that would endure for approximately 350 years, not concluding until near the end of the 17th century. In the immediate wake of the battle, each clan alternately harried the other's lands and lifted cattle, a cycle of reprisals that continued until the famous Battle of Invernahavon in 1370.

Casualties & Losses

A number of Mackintosh and Clan Shaw men were mortally wounded; Cameron casualties not specified in the sources
