Aedan mac Gabráin — the greatest of the early Scottish kings of Dál Riata — fought multiple battles against the Picts, the Britons of Strathclyde, and the Northumbrians. This engagement in Fife represents the Dál Riatan attempt to project power into Pictish territory east of the Firth of Forth.
