History & Significance

The MacKintoshes were early and loyal Bruce supporters in the Wars of Independence. Following Bruce being crowned king in 1306, the MacKintosh chief moved against Comyn-held positions in Badenoch. Ruthven Castle was a key Comyn stronghold controlling the upper Spey. Its capture extended Bruce control into the Highland interior.
