History & Significance

Reculver (Regulbium) was one of the chain of Saxon Shore forts built around the south-east coast to defend against Saxon and Frankish piracy and raiding in the late Roman period. The fort guarded the northern entrance to the Wantsum Channel that then separated the Isle of Thanet from mainland Kent. Roman naval patrols (the Classis Britannica) operated from such bases to intercept raiders before they could penetrate inland.
