During the Great Revolt of 1173-74, when Henry II's sons rebelled with support from foreign powers, the Earl of Leicester joined the uprising. Henry II's forces burned Leicester — destroying the town while the castle held. The Earl was captured at Fornham in Suffolk. The suppression demonstrated Henry II's military effectiveness even when facing revolt from his own family.
