History & Significance

Welsh resistance at Caerleon, the former Roman fortress city, contested Norman penetration into Gwent in the 1080s. The Normans established a castle at Caerleon as a forward base for operations into Gwent and the uplands. Welsh forces conducted raids against the Norman garrison and its supply lines. The Caerleon castle was repeatedly damaged and restored in the following decades as Welsh resistance continued.
