History & Significance

Dougall eldest son of Somerled established himself in Lorn and Mull after his father's death, founding the MacDougall dynasty. His fortification of Dunstaffnage and expansion through Argyll created the MacDougall lordship that would briefly become the most powerful family in the western Highlands before their destruction by Robert Bruce in 1308.
