After Hamilton army was destroyed at Preston western Scottish Covenanters marched on Edinburgh in September 1648 and overthrew the Engager regime; Argyll took power; Cromwell visited Edinburgh in October 1648 cementing the new arrangement; the Whiggamore Raid reshaped Scottish politics and ultimately led to the covenanting government that then fell out with Cromwell over Charles II.
