A Surrey Royalist rising in 1648 attempted to seize Kingston bridge as a crossing point over the Thames. Parliamentary cavalry intercepted and dispersed the Surrey insurgents before they could consolidate. The action prevented the Surrey rising from joining the larger Kentish insurrection north of the Thames.
