History & Significance

Swarkestone Bridge — the longest medieval stone bridge in England, crossing the Trent — was strategically critical for any army moving between the north and south Midlands. Control of this crossing was contested during the Civil War. The bridge would later be the southernmost point reached by the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745.
