The Battle

History & Significance

Hillesden House in Buckinghamshire near the Northamptonshire border was a significant Royalist garrison. Cromwell and Skippon stormed it in March 1644 with Eastern Association forces, capturing 140 prisoners. The reduction of such outlying Royalist garrisons was systematically necessary to clear the path for major operations. Hillesden's fall helped secure the approaches to Oxford from the east.
