History & Significance

Cardigan Castle changed hands during the Civil War. The Royalists initially controlled Cardiganshire but Parliamentary forces under Colonel Rice Powell gradually reduced the Royalist garrisons in west Wales. Cardigan's castle — on the Teifi — was one of the strategic points controlling the coastal route through west Wales. The castle ruins survive in the town centre.
