In 1291, as Edward I prepared to arbitrate the succession dispute, Scottish lords including the Comyns moved to seize and garrison key castles to strengthen their position. The castle seizures were a form of political leverage -- controlling the physical infrastructure of the kingdom while the legal question of kingship was decided. Edward I demanded the castles be surrendered to him as a precondition for his arbitration, and the Guardians complied, thereby inadvertently handing England control of Scotland's fortresses.
