History & Significance

At Airds Moss in Ayrshire on 22 July 1680, government dragoons caught Richard Cameron and a small band of Covenanting field preachers. Cameron had recently issued the Sanquhar Declaration disowning Charles II. In the skirmish that followed Cameron and several of his followers were killed; his head and hands were cut off and displayed in Edinburgh. The action at Airds Moss ended the life of the most radical field preacher of the Killing Time.
