The Battle

History & Significance

The first English battle in which longbow was used decisively against longbow — the opening exchange of arrows caused horrific casualties on both sides simultaneously. The young Prince Henry (future Henry V) was shot through the face with an arrow and continued fighting. Hotspur was killed — possibly by an arrow in the visor. His body was displayed, salted, and publicly quartered to prevent rumours he had survived. The battle shattered the powerful Percy family's challenge to the Lancastrian throne.
