History & Significance

Edward II confronted the baronial rebels under Thomas of Lancaster at Burton-on-Trent. Lancaster held the Trent crossing. Edward II's forces eventually found an alternative ford and threatened to outflank the rebels, who retreated northward. The confrontation at Burton was bloodless but forced Lancaster into his ultimately fatal retreat toward Scotland.
