The Battle

History & Significance

The Battle of Drum na Coub in 1427 was one of the most significant engagements in the long Mackay-Sutherland territorial war over Strathnaver. Clan Mackay under Neil Mackay defeated Sutherland forces attempting to penetrate Strathnaver from the south. The battle temporarily settled the contested boundary in Mackay favour and allowed Clan Mackay to consolidate their hold on the fertile straths of northern Sutherland.
