History & Significance

Royalists reoccupied Crowland Abbey after Parliament's initial capture and established a second garrison. The island position in the Fens remained strategically valuable for controlling access to the Isle of Ely and the Cambridge approaches. Parliament reduced it again in 1645 as part of consolidating control of the eastern counties.
