The Battle

History & Significance

Disinherited barons under John de Vescy held out in the Isle of Axholme in the fens of Lincolnshire following Evesham. The island was similar in character to the Ely position with natural fenland defences. Henry III's government brokered terms through Gilbert de Clare. Axholme surrendered before Kenilworth fell, showing the disinherited were weakening across the board by late 1265.
