High Rochester (Bremenium) was one of the most exposed Roman forts in Britain, positioned 20 miles north of Hadrian Wall in what is now Northumberland. It was attacked and rebuilt multiple times in the 3rd century. The discovery of elaborate artillery dedications (ballistaria) at the site shows the garrison knew they needed defensive firepower. The fort was eventually abandoned when the Roman outpost system north of the Wall was reduced.
