The Battle

History & Significance

Charles I raised his standard at Nottingham on 22 August 1642, the formal declaration of war. The weeks before the standard raising saw royalist commissioners of array attempting to muster the Nottinghamshire trained bands for the king against competing parliamentary militia ordinance nominees. The Nottingham muster confrontations were representative of the pre-war standoff being repeated in counties across England.
