History & Significance

As the Engager army under Hamilton concentrated for its southward march into England in 1648, Stirling and its bridge became a focus of minor conflict. Anti-Engager Covenanting sympathisers in the area attempted to obstruct the crossing, and Engager forces conducted patrols to secure the vital Stirling bridge crossing point. The strategic significance of Stirling made it always a focus of military activity during the Scottish Civil War.
