The Battle

History & Significance

Glyndwr mounted a second major assault on Caernarfon Castle in 1404 at the height of his power. The outer walls were again attacked. In this assault gunpowder artillery may have been used by the Welsh, one of the earliest recorded uses of cannon in a Welsh siege context. The castle again held under determined defenders. Caernarfon s survival was critical to maintaining English presence in north Wales.
