The Battle

History & Significance

Simon de Montfort senior was trapped west of the Severn by Prince Edward who controlled the river crossings. In attempting to find a way east to junction with his son, de Montfort moved south along the Severn seeking unguarded fords. At Kempsey near Worcester he succeeded in crossing but the delay cost him time. Edward seized the northern crossings first, making Kempsey the only option.
