History & Significance

The Whiggamore Raid of 1648 saw western Covenanters march on Edinburgh after the destruction of the Engager army at Preston. Stirling was secured; the Engager government of Hamilton collapsed. This brought the Kirk party back to power and created the conditions for Charles II's alliance with the Scots in 1650.
