On his return from German captivity in 1194, Richard I marched directly to Nottingham, where his brother John\'s garrison held the castle. Richard besieged and stormed the outer works so rapidly that the garrison surrendered within days, not believing the king himself was present. Richard then held a council in Sherwood Forest — possibly the origin of his legendary association with Robin Hood\'s forest. The rapid reduction of Nottingham symbolised Richard\'s forceful reassertion of royal authority after three years of captivity.
