History & Significance

Lincoln Castle was held for the Empress Matilda when King Stephen attempted its relief. The castle had been surprised by imperialist forces and the garrison appealed to Stephen. His advance to relieve it led directly to the Battle of Lincoln where he was captured. The castle garrison held out until after the battle, ultimately surrendering when news of Stephen's capture arrived.
