The Battle

History & Significance

Henry I besieged Arundel Castle as part of his campaign to suppress the Belleme rebellion of 1102. Arundel, held for the rebel Roger de Montgomery, was one of several southern castles that had to be reduced before Henry could focus on the Shropshire Marcher strongholds. The castle's position controlling the Arun valley and southern routes made it strategically important, and its capture helped Henry secure the south before turning north and west against the main rebel base.
