The Knoydart clearances of 1853 by Josephine MacDonell removed virtually the entire population of the Knoydart peninsula. The evictions were carried out by estate officers supported by agents who arrived by sea. Cleared tenants were shipped to Canada against their wishes. The Knoydart clearances were among the most complete removals of any Highland district.
